Worthington expects to sign a new contract next week which would take him to the end of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Worthington said he feels "no pressure" at becoming the highest paid manager in Northern Ireland's history.

"I'm delighted - with some good results and a little bit of luck I may even extend my stay," he added.

"The contract is being drawn up and hopefully it will be sealed next week.

"The money is not a factor and I'm still a long way behind Fabio Capello with England.

"What I've asked for is a fair day's pay for a fair day's work and the IFA know they are going to get commitment in abundance."

The deal comes after protracted negotiations between Worthington's representatives and the IFA.

Worthington was in charge for the final six Euro 2008 qualifying fixtures.

He had guided Northern Ireland to two wins, a draw and three defeats in the final games of the recent Euro 2008 qualifying series.

This secured a creditable third place finish in a group which saw Sweden and Spain progress.

Lawrie Sanchez had taken charge for the first half of the campaign before leaving to manage Fulham.

Worthington promises that he will not follow Sanchez and walk out on the job during the qualifying campaign.

"These things take a bit of time but we got there in the end and everyone is happy with the deal," he said.

"I will be fully committed to the cause - I will enjoy the work and I'm looking forward to it.

"There have been clauses mentioned, more from the IFA point of view, which I can understand.

"They want to cover their back after the last scenario (with Sanchez) which I understand.

"So there's a situation in there, for whatever reason, but I don't see any reason why I should be leaving prior to that two years."

Northern Ireland have been drawn in the same World Cup group as the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and San Marino.
