Capello believes England's players lack confidence |
New England manager Fabio Capello faces a massive challenge to win a major tournament, admits Football Association boss Brian Barwick. The chief executive described Capello, 61, as a "winner with a capital W" at the Italian's unveiling on Monday.
But Barwick has warned it will be hard for England to win a major tournament.
"There is no triumphalism. Fabio knows he has a serious job to do. This is a team that has not qualified for the European Championships," he said.
Director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking added: "We are not getting carried away by the thought that suddenly, because we have Fabio, we will become world-beaters, because we will not.

"We have not won anything for 40 years. Let us not expect him to suddenly win us two big championships.
"We cannot sit back and think everything is rosy. What we have to do is try to get the best out of that group of players."
Capello, who has enjoyed great success as a club manager in Italy and Spain, will get his first chance to impress the England supporters when his side face Switzerland in a friendly at Wembley on 6 February.
"Fabio has a job to do in terms of mental attitude and what happens when the players cross the white line," added Barwick.
"He needs to do a lot of work on the players' confidence, as well as the ability and tactics.

"We have a set of disaffected supporters. They are fed up with us because we have not qualified for Euro 2008 and because we didn't play especially well during the World Cup.
"People put great store by supporting their country. It is a special thing and it pulls them together.
"We are not just going for a quick-fix. We have a guy who is committed to turning the situation round.
"We also have to turn round the public perception of what we are. They pay a lot of money and come in vast numbers. They are hugely supportive and over the last couple of years we have let them down."
Meanwhile former England captain Tony Adams has said he would not turn down the chance to join his country's coaching set-up if asked.
The Portsmouth assistant manager told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "I can't refuse my country, I wouldn't dare.
"But I am happy at Portsmouth and am doing a job there and it's not even been spoken about. It is hypothetical and the FA have not come on to me.
"I went to see Fabio and watch him work because he is a winner and a champion. They have got a first-class coach and I am a big fan of his but I just don't want him as England manager - I want it to be one of our guys."
