The 37-year-old veteran Rangers defender and Christian Dailly are the only survivors of the 1998 World Cup squad in the current set-up.

"It's what you play international football for," he said.

"We have given ourselves a great chance and we want to finish that off. We have come a long way."

Scotland beat Ukraine 3-1 on Saturday and are now four points away from guaranteed qualification for the European Championship finals from Group B.

They have a trip to Georgia on Wednesday and the visit of Italy to come.

And, although the Scots are receiving the plaudits for leading a group containing the two World Cup finalists, Weir knows it will not be easy in Tbilisi.

Scotland needed a last-gasp goal by substitute Craig Beattie to earn a 2-1 victory over Klaus Toppmoller's side at Hampden Park in March.

"It will be very difficult," said Weir. "They are a good side, everybody saw that here.

"We need to get ourselves ready, there's no doubt that.

"We will have to put on a good performance to get a result.

"What people expect doesn't really matter, it's what we do.

"We are keeping ourselves focused. We are focused on the next game and that's the most important one."

James McFadden sealed Saturday's victory with a 68th-minute strike to allow the Tartan Army to start contemplating a summer in Austria and Switzerland.

But, like his former Everton team-mate, McFadden is not looking beyond Wednesday night in Georgia.

"Everybody wants to be there, the whole country wants to be there, but we are just taking every game as it comes," he said.
