Scotland have enjoyed a fine Euro 2008 campaign so far |
Scotland's excellent run of form should result in a number two seeding in the race for places at World Cup 2010. Uefa has been meeting to discuss the rankings for European nations, with the World Cup qualifying draw taking place in South Africa on 23 November.
The Fifa rankings list will have more significance than ever and the Scots currently stand 11th best in Europe.
Scotland were among the fourth seeds for the Euro 2008 campaign but top their section at the moment.
Uefa general secretary David Taylor confirmed to BBC Sport from Istanbul: "We have decided on the process for the draw for the World Cup qualifiers to be held in November in South Africa.
"The good news is that we are going to be using the Fifa rankings for the first time and Scotland are in a good seeding position.

"In terms of the current position, Scotland are number 11 out of 53 and it very much looks like we will be in the second group of seeds."
Incredible wins at home and away against France have seen the Scots exceed most expectations during the current campaign.
World Cup holders Italy and Ukraine also trail Alex McLeish's side, with three matches remaining.
With tough games against Ukraine, Georgia and Italy to come, Scotland may yet falter and fail to reach the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland.
But Taylor, who until recently was chief executive at the Scottish FA, thought it unlikely that his home nation would fall far enough to miss out on a good seeding.

"There are two monthly rankings to come and Scotland would have to fall to number 19 to be out of the top two pots," he said.
A second seed spot should significantly improve Scotland's chances of reaching a World Cup for the first time since 1998.
Europe will send 13 representatives to South Africa in 2010, with nine group winners going through.
The eight best runners-up will play-off for the final four places at the finals.
