Ludlow demands more Wales funding
Wales and Arsenal captain Jayne Ludlow
Ludlow has tasted unprecedented success with Arsenal this season
Jayne Ludlow says Wales will never be able to compete with the world's best sides unless they are better funded by the Football Association of Wales.

Ludlow captained Wales to a 6-0 loss to Germany in a Uefa 2009 Championship qualifier at Haverfordwest on Tuesday.

"The lack of funding is a barrier I've had throughout my career with the Welsh FA," said the Arsenal midfielder.

"There's no money being put into the sport in Wales compared to the rest of the UK and it's really frustrating."

Ludlow captained Arsenal to an unprecedented quadruple this season, winning the FA Cup, Premier League title, League Cup and Uefa Cup.

Almost 25,000 fans attended Monday's FA Cup final against Charlton, which was televised live by the BBC, and Ludlow fears the game in Wales will be left behind unless the governing body provides more support.

we hope we will be able to arrange a friendly game prior to Wales' next qualifier

"We were hoping to go to the Algarve Cup and have four friendlies in a week but that's been put on hold for whatever reason," she said.

"I don't know what people expect from us when we meet up twice a year, if that.

"We're not asking for a million pounds just a weekend together here and there."

Wales were playing for the first time since winning promotion to the top tier of international women's football in Europe.

The Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland are the other teams in their Euro 2009 qualifying group, with games played on a home and away basis.

In response to Ludlow's criticisms, a spokesman for the FA of Wales said the women's side had played more games this season than in any other previous season.

"The senior women's side has played 9 internationals this season, which includes 3 friendlies and 6 championship matches," he said.

"We are currently planning next season's calendar and we hope we will be able to arrange a friendly game prior to Wales' next qualifier away to the Netherlands in August."
