IFA chief Howard Wells says radical reform is necessary |
The Irish League structure is to remain unchanged for next season and promotion and relegation between the Premier and First Division will stay the same. IFA Chief Exceutive Howard Wells has however circulated a letter to all Premier League clubs with proposals which may be implemented in 2008/09.
Clubs will be invited to bid against an agreed criteria to take part in a new proposed senior league for that season.
An independent ranking of clubs should be completed by late summer in 2007.
Wells is also continuing his efforts to secure a commercial sponsorship and media package for the proposed new league.
Bobby Jameson, Chairman of the Irish Premier League committee, said that he was delighted that there was unanimity between the clubs for the continuation of the League in its present form for next season.
"It is important to make a step change in our thinking and to make radical changes that will see the game on a much sounder footing from which to build.
"Tinkering around the edges was not an option in my view and I am pleased that the clubs themselves have supported this principle," said Wells.
