Ferguson hopes to face France at Hampden on Saturday |
Barry Ferguson is determined to fight for his place in the Scotland team to face France at Hampden on Saturday. The national skipper missed the opening two games of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign through injury but has played in six of Rangers' last seven ties.
"I think I've shown in the last two games that I'm back to near my best form and fitness," he told BBC Sport.
"But I've got a fight on my hands because the lads have done a great job for Scotland without me."
Scotland sit top of Group B, level on points with France, after wins over the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.
But manager Walter Smith is expected to reinstate his captain to the centre of midfield for the visit of the French.
"I'll just train hard and hope to get selected," added Ferguson, who has won 33 caps.
"Every game for Scotland means everything to me, especially if you get the honour of captaining your country."
Scotland did well in Ferguson's absence, with Darren Fletcher, Paul Hartley and Nigel Quashie making up an impressive midfield trio.

Ferguson's return would require a reshuffle, with perhaps Fletcher or Hartley asked to play a more advanced role in support of a lone striker.
Everton forward James McFadden, who has been out injured since Scotland's win in Lithuania last month, could be the man to miss out if manager Walter Smith chooses to accomodate all four midfielders.
Ferguson, who also missed Scotland's successful Kirin Cup trip to Japan in May, is in confident mood ahead of the games with France and Ukraine.
"We have got to go for six points," he said. "With the squad we've got, and looking at the last two performances, everyone was outstanding.
"We can't fear anyone. You give them respect before the game but once you go across the white line we'll show them no respect and have a go.
"There is a belief in the squad since Walter came in and you can see that in the way we play. He has installed great team spirit and has shown what a great manager he is."
