New England manager Steve McClaren has made the first big decision of his reign by naming John Terry as the new England captain to succeed David Beckham. BBC Sport surveyed a number of ex-captains to find out who their choice would be.

I think the issue is irrelevant at the moment. It's the least of Steve McClaren's problems.
The trouble is you pick a captain and then they get injured the Saturday before the game so I would pick my captain on a match-by-match basis.
And for this next match, I would go for Gary Neville.
He offers stability, he's a good competitor, he has done it for England on a regular basis and he has the right temperament.
We've got two candidates and they stand out immensely: John Terry and Steven Gerrard.
They're both wonderful leaders and they're wonderful in their performances.
Being a midfield player, I should probably go for Gerrard but I'm not, I'm going to go for John Terry.
Terry is an immense leader. He never drops below a certain level of performance. He might have the occasional slip but his overall level of performance is extremely high.
The England captaincy is obviously a very important job and I would never ever pick a forward, I would always pick a defender or a midfielder.
With the current crop of players, it would be between John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville and I think because of what he can offer in terms of experience, I'd go for Gary Neville.
If it was between Terry and Gerrard, I would go for Gerrard, but I think Gary Neville has got more qualifications at this moment in time.
Steve McClaren is very lucky to have two players of England captain material. John Terry and Steven Gerrard are both excellent candidates but if I had to choose I'd go for John Terry.
I've known John a long time: I've seen him come through the reserves, get into the first team and lead Chelsea to two league titles.
Even when he was a kid, he was captain material. He leads by example.
My vote would go to Steven Gerrard, although it's a very close race with Terry.
I think Gerrard is more assured of his place in the side. He's a driving force of a player, very consistent, and plays at a high level.
He speaks a good game, he conducts himself well with the media, he's got everything you need in a captain. He's perfect all round.
Fortunately, we've got a lot of candidates out there but for me it would be John Terry.
He stands out an absolute mile.
He leads by example and his own performances are quite exceptional at the moment - and it's nice to see captains at centre half as well.
For me, either John Terry or Steven Gerrard would be a really good captain.
At the end of the day it's Steve McClaren's decision. I think you can toss a coin and it doesn't really matter which way it comes down.
Whether it's Gerrard or Terry, it's a good decision either way.
I would give the armband to Steven Gerrard and play him on the right, he's got the experience for it.
You could look at Terry as well but I would say Gerrard out of the two.
Gary Neville could be a temporary captain but you want to look ahead and get somebody there for the long term.
You are looking at a captain for Euro 2008 and the World Cup in 2010 and it is Gerrard for me.
Gary is away on holiday but we tracked him down and he texted to let us know that Steven Gerrard would be his choice as England captain.
