Terry and Gerrard are in the running to succeed Beckham |
Former England manager Graham Taylor believes Chelsea defender John Terry should become captain of his national side after David Beckham stood down. But ex-England skipper Terry Butcher says new boss Steve McClaren must pick Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.
Taylor told BBC Five Live Sport: "At the back you can see more of what's going on, so it is Terry for me."
But Butcher argued: "I would give the armband to Gerrard and play him on the right, he's got the experience for it."

He added: "You could look at Terry as well but I would say Gerrard out of the two.
"Gary Neville maybe in the squad could be a temporary captain but you want to look ahead and get somebody there for the long term.
"You are looking at a captain for Euro 2008 and the World Cup in 2010 and it is Gerrard for me."
Beckham relinquished the captaincy on Sunday following England's exit in the quarter-finals of the World Cup at the hands of Portugal 24 hours earlier.
He was skipper for six years, having been given the armband by caretaker-manager Peter Taylor for the friendly with Italy in November 2000.
The Real Madrid midfielder captained the side on 58 occasions.
