Wales door ajar for Savage return
Robbie Savage
Assistant coach Roy Evans has hinted that Robbie Savage might be welcomed back into the Wales squad.

The Blackburn midfielder is rumoured to be regretting his hasty retirement from the international game, after new Wales boss John Toshack failed to pick him.

"I don't think anything is ever over," said former Liverpool boss Evans.

"I'm not privy to what's going on with Robbie or John, but if it sorts itself out then fantastic - there's two or three other players we'd like back."

At the beginning of March, Savage, just 30 years old, reacted angrily to being told he would not be involved in the Wales squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Austria.

And after 39 caps, he announced his retirement from the international game, saying that he was "backed into a corner" by Toshack who "obviously doesn't like me".

Savage became the seventh player to retire from Wales since Toshack took over from ex-manager Mark Hughes.

Former skipper Gary Speed, Mark Pembridge, Andy Johnson, Andy Melville, Nathan Blake and Mark Crossley are the others.

Wales lost 2-0 in their World Cup qualifier against Austria at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday and Evans noted the extra experience in the visitors' squad.

"If you look at the Austrian team they probably had six players over the age of 30 and they're still going strong," Evans added.

"We need all the help we can get, but hopefully we can do ourselves proud over in Austria on Wednesday and come away with some sort of a result."

Savage still has friends in the Wales squad, but they are thought to have told him that his very public criticisms of Toshack and his training methods were ill-advised.

But it remains to be seen whether former Real Madrid boss Toshack would welcome back a player who has gone out of his way to be disruptive in the past.
