 | If we do not have too many injuries out in Germany we will do a very good job. That is my conviction |
Sven-Goran Eriksson is adamant he will not be driven out of the England job by mounting criticism of his regime. Eriksson's methods have come under the microscope after a succession of poor showings, despite England qualifying for the World Cup with a game to spare.
But ahead of the final Group Six game against Poland at Old Trafford he said: "We have qualified and now let's see what happens at the World Cup.
"I have a contract until 2008 and I am convinced we will get good results."
He added: "The only way I will leave this job will be because of results. I'm too stubborn to quit because of criticism - too stubborn."
And Eriksson believes England can put their recent unconvincing form behind them to shine in Germany next summer.
He said: "My dream is the same as your dream, the same as all the fans and players. That is to win a big tournament and win the World Cup.
"We have gone out of two big tournaments on marginal things, almost nothing."
He said: "I was convinced we would qualify and now we have qualified. If we do not have too many injuries out in Germany we will do a very good job. That is my conviction."
Owen predicts England will sparkle in World Cup finals |
Meanwhile, Michael Owen has defended Eriksson over claims that the Swede needs to show more passion.
"He's not that type of person," said the England striker ahead of the game against Poland. "We knew he wasn't that type before he even came here.
"So, if he started smashing teacups and going onto the field of play throttling referees then I'm sure people would say he's lost his marbles.
"I don't think you can win in this situation really. "There are plenty of different ways you can inspire teams."
Owen predicted England, who suffered embarrassing defeats to Denmark and Northern Ireland before Saturday's win over Austria, would be a different proposition in the World Cup finals.
He said: "You can't tell me we'll be taking this form of the last few games into a game against Brazil, Germany or Italy.
"You can't tell me that because we're playing like this now they'll beat us 3-0. We've got proper players that will rise to these games...they are not going to lie down and die to anyone."
"At a top game at the World Cup, every team fancies their chances.
"It's virtually a different sport, a different game...in the World Cup when they fancy themselves against you and you fancy yourself against them."
