England's unconvincing 1-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Austria left BBC Sport's football experts stunned. Alan Shearer, Alan Hansen, Terry Butcher and Graham Taylor gave their thoughts to BBC Sport television and radio after the game.
First and foremost we needed a victory and we got a victory.
"But then you have to ask if there are many positive points to take from it, and I have to admit that there aren't really. Not many at all.
"Right from the start there was an opportunity to really get at Austria and get some goals and make a point.
"But in the 65 minutes England had with 11 men they did not really do that.
"And they never looked like doing it either.
"I would not say that the sending off of David Beckham spoiled the game because it was not much of a game before that. It was drab.
"If you look at England's last three performances they have been poor. And again today there was not enough adventure or enthusiasm.
I thought it was sad to see so many great players play so badly.
"At times it was a bit like a schoolboy game, with everybody chasing the ball and there was no shape.
"I thought England would never have a better chance of winning the World Cup than next year but I'm not so sure that's right any more.
"They can't go to Germany and play anything like that and expect to win the World Cup.
"There aren't many games left for them to get it right.
"In the last 10 minutes England were hanging on against a team that had really shown nothing up until then.
"Peter Crouch is 6 feet 7 inches tall and there would be something wrong if he wasn't good in the air, but for me he isn't mobile enough for international level.
They did a job and this is one of the biggest results of Sven-Goran Eriksson's England career. It could easily have gone pear-shaped.
"England had to dig deep and defend well and they did exactly that. The sending-off may have been unfair but they did the job effectively.
"If you'd have said 1-0 before the match, England would have taken it and if you'd have said 1-0 after Beckham's sending-off they would definitely have taken it.
"They've got the three points and eked it out. It's now a case of settling everybody down and getting the system right for Wednesday's match against Poland.
When we come up against a side that plays 4-4-2, I don't worry about Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
"But if a side outnumbers us in the middle I get concerned. Neither of them are natural holding players.
"I think Ledley King has a part to play in future England performances as a holding midfielder.
"I don't think Beckham was unlucky. I can understand why the referee acted like he did.
"After his first yellow card, Beckham immediately made a very rash challenge and conceded a free-kick: that upsets referees.
"Peter Crouch did well. He had some nice touches and played people in. He was involved in most of the build-up play that led to shots on goal.
"But this match certainly showed how much we miss Ashley Cole.
"Why, in more than four years in charge, has Sven not been able to solve that problem on the left-hand side?
