Real Madrid star David Beckham has played down a report that he was going to retire from international football after the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The 29-year-old England skipper hopes to become only the fifth Englishman to reach 100 international caps.
"I'm not looking to retire. I hope to keep going as long as my legs will take me," said Beckham, who has 76 caps.
"As a youngster everyone dreams of playing for and captaining England, and I've been lucky enough to do both."
In a report in the Daily Star newspaper on Saturday, Beckham was quoted as saying the 2006 World Cup would be "probably as far as it will go for me as an England player".
But he said on Monday that he meant that would probably be his last World Cup - not that he would stop playing.
Instead he aims to join Sir Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Peter Shilton and Billy Wright in the English centurions club.
Meanwhile Beckham's club and international teammate Michael Owen has insisted he never had any doubts about succeeding at the Spanish club. He said: "I never felt I made a mistake coming here. I said before the Wales game that I said I'd fight to the death to succeed.
"I've never shirked a challenge in my life and I am always confident.
"It is the highest level you can play at, internationals and for Real Madrid.
"There is no higher level and I'm totally at ease at myself and was totally comfortable that I could do the business at this level.
"I never, ever thought any different."
