Shearer puts brakes on Beattie
Beattie has scored 11 goals in the last eight Premiership games
James Beattie is in fine form for Southampton
Alan Shearer believes Southampton striker James Beattie is not yet ready to be picked for England.

Beattie is the Premiership's top scorer, and he has scored his 11 goals in the last eight matches.

But former England captain Shearer said international caps are being given to some players too soon.

The Newcastle and former Saints forward told The Sun newspaper: "A lot of caps have been given out for players who haven't earned them.

"Beattie has done it for two or three months - if he can do it for seven or eight then maybe.

"He is a powerful player with a tremendous shot and is very good in the air.

"The signs are good, but he has to be more consistent.

"He has had purple patches over the previous two or three seasons and died off.

"But this year he is more prolific, and I hope he keeps going - if he does he will get a chance for England."
