Cheltenham's cult heroes

This vote is now closed.

Neil Grayson has been voted Cheltenham's all-time cult hero by Football Focus viewers.

Grayson won with 42% of the vote, ahead of fellow Cheltenham favourites Steve Book and Dave Lewis.

NEIL GRAYSON: 42%

An absolute legend at Whaddon Road who after only a few seasons of passionate committed displays totally endeared himself to all at the club. A monster to play against on the pitch, but a gentleman and family man off it. In all my time supporting the club I have never known anyone as universally acclaimed for his effort and fight for the cause. Having played for so many clubs throughout his career he finally seemed to find his true home at Whaddon well into his 30s. He was part of the Steve Cotterill era and the rise from non-league to league and it was fitting he played his last game at the Millennium Stadium coming on as a substitute - in fact he drilled a shot goalbound that hit an upright towards the end of the game that would have been a fitting end to a great career at the club.
Paul Halling

The most whole-hearted player I've seen. 100% honest and in all the games I saw him in, not one went by without 'Larry' picking up the obligatory head injury requiring treatment on the field! A real talisman for fans and players and scored some absolutely crucial goals in the Robins' rise up the football league since the late-nineties. Could score with either foot and his head (indeed he did all three when scoring a hat-trick in one game) and also scored some fantastic long range efforts. Always well received by the fans of his previous clubs - Northampton especially - which shows that his attitude at Cheltenham was not a one-off and he was popular with supporters wherever he played.
Christopher Phillimore

Centre forward of immense strength and style. Instrumental in gaining the club's promotion to the football league and in their early successes in Div 3. Scored some sensational goals at the end of his league career.

STEVE BOOK: 24%

Part goalkeeper/part clown, Booky kept the home and away fans entertained with his performances both when called upon and when watching the match taking place further upfield. An old favourite was a self imposed 'wedgie' to show off his cheeks to the supporters behind the goal!
Christopher Phillimore

Always one to try and get the home fans singing and cheering to support the team. But perhaps the most perplexing for away fans would be the home fans' habit of booing the goalkeeper as he came out at the start of each half to take his place between the sticks. This went back to the club's conference days when the kit quality was perhaps not as it is now and the 'k' of Book's name was coming off his jersey! The boo's started then and remained a fixture from then on! Booky gave as good as he got though!Anon

Keeper, popular more for his antics with the crowd than for his shot stopping, which was good. Shame he couldn't catch a cross.
Glenn Andrews

DAVE LEWIS: 34%

A brilliant goalscorer from our non league days and someone who still has links with the club.
Paul Halling

200+ goals, need I say more?
Glenn Andrews
