Geremi was speaking after Cameroon beat a 'Friendship XI' side 3-1 on Tuesday in a charity match in memory of Marc-Vivien Foe

Foe died at the same Gerland ground in the French city of Lyon on 26 June after collapsing during a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia.

Nearly 24,000 spectators were at the Gerland Stadium to pay their respects to Foe.

Patrick Mboma, who flew from Japan to celebrate the memory of his friend, Paris-St Germain's Modest Mbami and Samuel Eto'o of Real Mallorca scored Cameroon's goals in this memorial game shown on French television.

The 'Friendship team', comprising the likes of Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord and Nicolas Anelka, scored through Brazilian Sonny Anderson, a former team mate of Foe's at Olympique Lyon.

The income from the game will go to a charity fund chaired by Foe's wife Marie-Louise.

"Many people come to celebrate this game on behalf of Marco," Geremi told BBC One's Football Focus.

"The reason we played the match was to pay respect and I would like to thank the people, the fans who came to see us. We were friends of Marco and we will never forget this moment.

"Marco will never, ever be forgotten. Never."

Foe, who was on loan at Manchester City last season, won French league titles with Lens and Lyon.

Foe made 65 appearances for Cameroon and played in two World Cup tournaments in 1994 and 2002 and twice won the African Nations Cup, in 2000 and 2002.
