Chester old boy Paul Rutherford hit a stunning Barrow equaliser to force an FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay at the Deva Stadium on Tuesday night.
Blue Square Premier backmarkers City looked on course for the first round when loan defender Johnny Flynn fired home at Holker Street on 16 minutes.
But, after going close through Simon Spender, Rutherford went close before finally bringing Barrow level.
And they would have won if it had not been for a bad, late miss by Jon Shaw.
Rutherford's stunning strike - his first for Barrow since his summer arrival following his release by Chester - was a 20-yard special after good work from Jason Walker.
Chester, ahead when Flynn netted after Barrow made a mess of defending a free-kick, also had their share of decent openings, loan men Mark Beesley and Michael Coulson both wasting chances to carve out a two-goal lead.
The replay will be at the Deva Stadium on Tuesday (27 October, 1945 GMT).
