Matty Williams proved to be both hero and sinner for the Saints
Wales' interest in Europe is over for another season, despite a battling second-leg Europa League play-off draw for The New Saints against CSKA Sofia.
Leading 3-0 from the first leg, Giuseppe Aquaro put the Bulgarians further ahead at Wrexham's Racecourse.
Matty Williams equalised, then a strong header from Steve Evans put the home side in front on the night.
But Williams was sent off for a second yellow and Christian Tiboni's late goal ended the Welsh side's brave run.
Extra spice had been added in the build-up to the contest by the Welsh Premier champions' claim that Sofia should be thrown out of the competition for breaking financial and administrative rules.
"Uefa checked a couple of their players from the first leg, but they've told us they were eligible," TNS general manager Ian Williams told BBC Radio Shropshire.
"But they are in disarray and there could be questions to be asked over the financial aspects of the club. Our enquiries won't stop."
The New Saints FC: Harrison, Danny Holmes, Baker, Evans, Tommy Holmes, Ruscoe, Hogan, Sharp (Berkeley 86), Matty Williams, Seargeant, Craig Jones (Wood 83). Subs Not Used: Simon Williams, Craig Williams, Rawlinson, McKenna, Darlington.
