Rangers ripped up the form book with their win in Lyon |
Rangers manager Walter Smith was pleasantly surprised to emerge with a convincing win in Lyon. "We had to work extremely hard for it and we are delighted," he said after the biggest ever Champions League away victory from a Scottish side.
"I don't think we could have imagined we would come to a club as strong as Lyon and win 3-0.
"We are a new team and we have shown that at least we can compete at this level in our first two games."
Rangers now face a double-header with Barcelona, with both sides enjoying maximum points from their opening matches.
And Smith is not getting carried away, despite the Ibrox club stealing a march on Lyon and Stuttgart, who both sit with no points at this stage.

"I don't think I insult anyone when I say Barcelona are out-and-out favourites to win the group," added Smith. "And the results between the rest of the teams are going to be vital, so we've got off to a really good start.
"We now go back-to-back with Barcelona, so I think the results between Lyon and Stuttgart over those two games will determine how the group will go."
DaMarcus Beasley netted the third goal after a header from Lee McCulloch and a fierce strike from Daniel Cousin.

And the USA international was overjoyed with the result.
"It wasn't expected," he told BBC Sport. "But we definitely deserved to win it.
"They hit the post a couple of times but we defended well and we took our chances.
"Barcelona will be a good test but, at the same time, I think whoever wins the next match is pretty much sure of going through to the next round.
"So it's a big game for us and for them.
"But we're not going to sneak up on anyone any more.
"We've taken six points from the champions of France and the champions of Germany so it will be interesting to see how Barcelona come out in a couple of weeks."
