Kenny Miller's goals helped Celtic to a vital home win over Benfica |
Celtic chairman Brian Quinn believes Gordon Strachan's side are on course to banish their Champions League demons. The club crashed out of the competition last year at the qualifying stage after a 5-4 defeat to Artmedia Bratislava.
But the 3-0 home win against Benfica gives them a great chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages.
Quinn said: "Last year was a shock. I think this year Gordon and the team are determined to show what they are capable of."
The club's chairman praised the side for their performance against the Portuguese.

"We are not counting our chickens yet but it was a big step forward last night," he said.
"I think the whole team played well from top to bottom, there wasn't a weak performance on the field."
Quinn said Celtic's finances would be boosted considerably by a decent run in Europe this season.
"It is a big, big boost to your revenue if you can do well in the Champions League," he said.
"I think Gordon is very settled and very happy, the man is loving every moment.
"That would be our intention, to keep Gordon happy and build on what he has achieved so far."
Gordon Strachan's sides have improved in Europe |
Strachan admitted that a 3-0 victory over Benfica in Champions League Group F was "beyond my wildest expectations".
"We were playing a very good team," he said. "We were playing against a team that beat Liverpool and Manchester United last season.
"It was excellent. How our two strikers played dictated our play.
"This puts us in a decent position in the group. We would have accepted that a month ago."
Celtic now sit second on six points, three points adrift of United but five ahead of Benfica and Copenhagen.
Two-goal hero Kenny Miller hailed the "massive result" as an important step in Celtic's bid for qualification.
"It's brilliant - a massive result and it puts us in a strong position," he said.
"The job's not done yet but we've given ourselves a good opportunity.
"We still have tough games against Man United here and Benfica away, but we've done what we said we had to by winning our two home games after losing the first in Manchester."
