Roddy wanted the game against PSG to remain at the Brandywell |
Derry City have confirmed that they will play their Uefa Cup first round first leg against Paris Saint Germain on 14 September at the Brandywell. The Candystripes considered moving the game from their 3,100 capacity home venue to accommodate the large number of fans wanting to watch the match.
"We believe it's the right thing to do for our city," said City chief executive Jim Roddy.
"It's been a hard decision and we have to increase ticket prices to cover it."
He added: "If we had taken it elsewhere, we would have been stripping the city of part of its identity.
"Our supporters believe it's the right decision, our manager Stephen Kenny believes it is, as do our sponsors and the board was 100% behind the decision.
"It was a bold decision to keep it in the city but there were more pros than cons."
Roddy also defended the price hike for tickets, which will see fans paying 25 to see their heroes in action.
"We are a business and we want to make this European run worthwhile for the club so we can support Stephen Kenny in his endeavours next season," he said.
"The maximum gate receipts from this game would be 75,000, which falls short for any other European tie at this level.
"There will be some tickets for public sale but not an awful lot.
"We have not moved forward with the pace of regulations - we are fully aware that this stadium is not fitting for such a tie."
The kick-off time for the first leg will be announced on Tuesday after a decision by French television on possible coverage of the game.
