Ferencvaros 3-1 Millwall
(Ferencvaros win 4-2 on aggregate)

Millwall's Paul Ifill (r) holds off Robert Vagner of Ferencvaros
Three first-half goals from Ferencvaros ended Millwall's hopes on a day marred by violent clashes between rival fans.

Denes Rosa nodded the Hungarians ahead from Robert Vagner's cross, then set-up Sorin Botis to head home a second.

Vagner's shot deflected in off Darren Ward to make it 3-0 on the night before Dennis Wise gave Millwall hope from close range before the break.

Peter Sweeney twice went close for the Lions before Mark McCammon hit the post but Ferencvaros held on to progress.

The game had been preceded by a series of skirmishes between opposing supporters in the centre of Budapest but a heavy police presence meant there were no further confrontations in the stadium.

On the pitch, Millwall were without the injured Daniele Dichio for their first ever European trip and instead chose to pair Paul Ifill with Neil Harris in attack, with Jody Morris partnering player-boss Wise in midfield.

But it was the home side who created the first opening when Peter Lipcsei sent Rosa running clear into the box - only for Graham Stack to stretch out a hand to block his clipped shot.

Millwall's first chance went to Paul Ifill when Lajos Szucs' punch fell for him in the area but the striker failed to connect with his volley and the ball sliced wide.

Despite a series of set-pieces in dangerous areas, Millwall were failing to threaten their hosts, while at the other end Ferencvaros looked increasingly threatening.

And the Hungarian champions duly took control of the tie with three goals in a whirlwind 14-minute spell.

Firstly Rosa was allowed to rise unmarked in the box to meet Vagner's curling cross from the left-flank and his flicked header left Stack helpless.

Millwall had a chance to reply immediately when Neil Harris won possession on the edge of the box but his snap-shot was straight at Szucs.

And within four minutes the Lions were 3-1 down on aggregate when a Rosa cross was met by a flying Botis header, which hit the bar and bounced down just over the line.

Millwall needed a quick response but instead they found themselves further behind when Vagner's shot from the edge of the area deflected off Ward and over Stack into the net.

Wise did give his side a glimmer of hope in first-half stoppage time when he got on the end of Livermore's driven cross-shot and lifted the ball over Szucs from close range.

But it still left the Lions needing to score another two goals after the break.

They went on the offensive, bringing on McCammon up front and switching Ifill to the right.

A Wise shot that drifted wide signalled their intent but Vagner's powerful strike at the other end was a warning that the home side were not finished yet.

However, Millwall still came forward and Harris went close before more Lions pressure saw substitute Sweeney shoot straight at Szucs from a Kevin Muscat cross.

Sweeney then shaved a post from the edge of the area when the keeper punched another Muscat cross to his feet.

Deep in stoppage time McCammon hit the post from Sweeney's free-kick but that was as good as it got for Wise's side, who bowed out with their heads held high.
