Zaccheroni takes over at Inter
New Inter Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni

Alberto Zaccheroni was officially unveiled as the new coach of Italian giants Inter Milan on Wednesday, three days after the club fired Hector Cuper.

The Argentine was fired after a disappointing 2-2 draw at lowly Brescia on Saturday and a 3-1 loss to main rivals AC Milan two weeks before that.

"President Massimo Moratti and I have the same ambitions and the same enthusiasm," said Zaccheroni.

"Now it's up to me to transmit these ambitions and this enthusiasm to the team," he added.

Currently languishing in 8th place in Serie A, Inter's confidence was further dented by Tuesday's 3-0 defeat at Lokomotiv Moscow.

"I have to convince the team that they can close the seven-point gap in the Serie A table and join the other sides that are currently up there," said Zaccheroni.

"I am looking to introduce some balance, dynamism and aggression.

"I still haven't had a chance to talk to the players. But I won't change much because it's a stressful moment.

"There's not much time so I must take advantage of these three or so days to speak with the players in every possible moment and understand in what psychological state they are.

"I'm convinced I can give the team direction because we have a strong group of players."

Interim coach Corrado Verdelli, who led the club in Russia said Inter's performance was "humiliating" and Zaccheroni will have to work more on the team's state of mind than tactics.

"The team is missing something," said Verdelli.

"There's tension inside the team and an enormous desire to make use of its potential. I leave Zaccheroni a team that must be improved not technically, but morally."

Zaccheroni is best known for leading AC Milan to the league title in 1999. He has also coached Bologna, Udinese and, most recently, Lazio.
