| Friday, 8 November, 2002, 23:42 GMT Robson open to Republic offer ![]() Robson has emerged as the bookies' favourite Former Middlesbrough manager Bryan Robson has revealed he would be interested in succeeding Mick McCarthy as Republic of Ireland coach. Robson emerged as the new favourite after John Toshack pulled out of the running by taking over as coach of Italian Serie B side Catania. "I have not had any contact, nobody from the Irish FA has been in touch," Robson told MUTV. "But if it is true that they would like to talk to me, I would be very interested." Robson said that he was attracted by the quality of the Republic's squad. "They have got some smashing players and it would be a good job," added Robson.
"There is a lot to work with given the quality of player they have. That is the type of job I am looking for." Former Liverpool striker and Tranmere boss John Aldridge and Luton Town manager Joe Kinnear are also strongly tipped to take over from Mick McCarthy. Ex-Leeds boss David O'Leary ruled himself out, saying he has no intention of moving into international management at this stage in his career. Italian side Catania are currently fourth-bottom in the second division of Italian football. Toshack, 53, completed discussions with Luciano Gaucci, whose family own both Catania and Serie A club Perugia, on Thursday. Toshack's first game in charge will be on Monday when the team travels to Tuscany to take on Siena. |
