Inaki Saez has resigned as manager of Spain following their exit after the group stage of Euro 2004. He initially said he would see out his contract and lead Spain's campaign to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
But Saez offered his resignation after a meeting with the Spanish football federation on Friday.
He said: "I have given the reasons for taking a decision which I will not go back on, which is to stop training the national side."
Saez has stepped down after holding the post for almost two years and two losses in 23 matches.
His failure to prevent the national team's exit from the championships was a far cry from his outstanding success with the country's junior teams.
He led Spain's under-21 team to the European championship in 1998, the under-20 side to World Cup triumph in Nigeria in 1999 and finished runner-up with the Olympic team in Sydney the following year.
