Germany coach Rudi Voeller refused to criticise his team after they were held by unfancied Latvia.

Voeller said: "We tried everything today and we had some chances, the best from (Miroslav) Klose at the end.

"You're disappointed after a match like this, a match everyone expects you to win. But I can't blame my team.

"It's no disgrace. Naturally we hoped for more, but we have to win the last match against the Czech Republic and we'll see what happens."

Voeller added: "We certainly didn't take them too lightly. They played a compact defence and that's where we had big problems.

"We couldn't get through the way we'd like to have. Without goals, you cannot win matches."

Germany will be eliminated if they cannot beat the Czechs in their last Group D game on Wednesday.

Voeller said: "Even if we had won today we wouldn't have been through. The team gave everything they had today.

"Now we have to beat the Czechs."

And Voeller know he has to get the best out of an usually subdued Michael Ballack to boost Germany's chances of victory.

He said: "We need to get Ballack to the box more often. Germany is dangerous when Ballack is dangerous."
