The Germans, coached by former player Rudi Voeller, began with a 2-0 win over Lithuania.

A month later the Faroe Islands paid a visit and posed the Germans quite a few problems.

An early Michael Ballack penalty was cancelled out by an own goal from defender Arne Friedrich just before half-time.

However, substitute Miroslav Klose saved his side from an embarrassing result with the match-winning goal shortly after the break.

Their poor run continued, drawing with Lithuania and then repeating the result against Berti Vogts' Scotland, both played in front of their home crowd.

A pivotal moment in their campaign came in Torshavn, where until the 89th minute they were faced with going back to Germany having only managed a 0-0 draw with the Faroe Islands.

Much to Voeller's relief, Klose and Fredi Bobic grabbed late goals to give the Germans all three points.

Iceland led the table after they beat the Faroes 2-1, which put added pressure on the Germans when the two top teams met in Reykjavik.

The visitors were given a tough time by Iceland and were fortunate to come away with a 0-0 draw after Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen spurned a golden chance in the first half.

Having been let off the hook on more than one occasion during the campaign, Voeller knew his side could not afford to fail in the final two matches.

A 2-1 win over Scotland meant they needed to defeat Iceland to secure their automatic passage.

And thanks to goals from Ballack, Bobic and Kevin Kuranyi, they did just that.
