Voeller was appointed in the wake of Germany's disastrous Euro 2000 campaign under Erich Ribbeck. Initially as a caretaker, Voeller earned the postion permanently after the incoming Christoph Daum tested positive for cocaine.
Despite an embarrassing 5-1 home defeat to England in qualifying, Voeller led the team to the 2002 World Cup final.
Voeller has never coached at club level but his status as a German legend has helped inspire his side.
A vital member of the 1990 World Cup winning squad, he draws on his vast experience from a playing career taking in spells at 1860 Munich, Werder Bremen, Roma and Marseille.
His newly-galvanised Germany topped their qualification group for Euro 2004, conceding just four goals.
Did you know? Voeller scored 47 goals in 90 appearances for his country, putting him third on Germany's all-time scorer list.
