Sven-Goran Eriksson made history in January 2001 when he became the first foreign coach of England. While his appointment was deemed a surprise at the time he has since taken England to the World Cup and Euro 2004.
England failed to beat Brazil in the quarter-finals in Japan and Korea two years ago, their only competitive defeat under Eriksson.
The Swede has been deemed so crucial to the future of the national side he has signed a contract until 2008.
Eriksson, who had an undistinguished playing career, has an impressive CV to date as a club manager.
He led IFK Gothenburg to Uefa Cup success in 1982 and has also managed Benfica and Lazio, with whom he won Serie A, the Cup Winners' Cup, the Super Cup and the Italian Cup.
