Accuse me of being biased, but I genuinely do not believe there was a better side out there than England.

When they played to their potential - most notably when Wayne Rooney came to the fore - they looked the likeliest candidates for overall victory.

Sadly, the team relied too much on him and, when he left the field in the Portugal game, things went downhill.

There are positives to be taken - most of these guys could be in contention at the World Cup in two years time.

But there were shortcomings as well. David Beckham looked shy of match fitness - at times almost sluggish.

And no England verdict can be complete without the mention of Swiss referee Urs Meier, who disallowed a legitimate Sol Campbell goal. Oh well, we've got to blame someone.
