Arsene Wenger backs Arsenal to win Premier League title

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his side's comprehensive 4-1 win at bottom club Portsmouth proved they have the fight to win the Premier League.

The Gunners' routine victory left them four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand and Wenger said: "We are up for it and we believe, no doubts.

"The commitment is there, the talent is there and the focus is there too.

"We will give it absolutely everything in the new year, we will fight for it. If we don't believe, nobody will."

Wenger paid tribute to Portsmouth, who remain four points adrift of 19th in the league, but said the Gunners deserved their success.

"It was a very competitive game and Pompey were very unlucky with the deflected first goal, but we produced a very committed performance," added Wenger.

"We looked like a team that was ready for it tonight and that's why we won the game, because Portsmouth are a good team."

The Frenchman has seen his squad hit by injuries in recent times, with the likes of captain Cesc Fabregas and strikers Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner all missing.

But he said they would not rush into making signings when the transfer window re-opens in January.

"Everybody is telling us to buy strikers, but we have scored 51 goals in 19 Premier League games so we have good balance somewhere," said Wenger.

"We are not against buying someone in January and we are looking, but we'll see. It depends how some of the injured players recover - the likes of Fabregas, Denilson, Bendtner.

"It is hard in January to find the right players. As well as that, we have some very good players on the brink of the team - some of them were on the bench tonight and more were at home - so we must evaluate that too."
