West Brom's season was summed up in the defeat by Liverpool.
They pushed Liverpool all the way. You might say perhaps Liverpool were not quite at the races because they had missed out on the league title but it was a strong team that they put out.
West Brom created a lot of chances in the first 15-20 minutes and actually had quite a lot of possession. Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said after the game that it was one of the hardest games he's played this season, even though they ran out winners.
But in the space of 90 minutes West Brom have put in a reasonable performance possession and attack wise and come away with nothing because of a lack of concentration and organisation in defence. That seems to be one of the things that the teams at the bottom have not been able to sort out.
Liverpool had what was a drop ball and they played it back to the Baggies centre-back Jonas Olsson. He passed to his other centre-half Shelton Martis, who had nobody around him.
But because he had space and time he took his eye off the ball and lacked that bit of urgency that you need even when you have got time. Steven Gerrard nipped in and all of a sudden they are 1-0 down.
You can also look at the chances that they failed to take and say they have missed four or five chances and they are unlucky.
Well, you can say that all day but if you give the ball away in dangerous areas and concede goals you are going to lose games and that has summed up West Brom's season in one game.
It's no coincidence that the teams at the bottom have all had problems defensively. It seems like it is the easiest thing to sort out and the attention to detail that if they got right, they would collectively create a more solid unit.
It's the little things like being in position quickly from throw-ins and set pieces. The teams at the bottom seem to not take those positions that seriously and, all of a sudden, they lose the ball and are under attack.
Little things from West Brom's game against Liverpool were where a shout would have enabled a player to either leave the ball, bring it down or knock it back to the keeper.
But nothing is said and the player puts the ball out for a corner. At this level if you are giving the top teams corners and free-kicks around the box because of a lack of communication then you are asking for trouble. That's what happened to West Brom when they conceded their first goal.
A huge amount of the game is played in the mind - The mind can play tricks and losing the ball in dangerous areas is about concentration
There are lots of different facets that make up a player and it's not just his ability to control the ball, his ability to pass and pick the right pass and know when to do the right thing.
It's also about concentration and focusing the mind on what needs to be done. Generally the top players at the best clubs are very good at this.
If they get an extra bit of time they still do the right thing quickly and efficiently because that gives them more time later in the game or in that particular move.
Sometimes the players at the struggling clubs are under a bit more pressure and there is more of an urgency to do well. They can take more time to make the right pass and can get caught in possession.
A huge amount of the game is played in the mind. The mind can play tricks and losing the ball in dangerous areas is about concentration.
West Brom must have been pretty upbeat about how they started the game before Martis made his mistake. They were all consoling him but they must also have been thinking here we go again.
Because they have been there before, they can sort of work the scenario out and, indeed, they go on and lose the game. You perhaps say they didn't deserve to but over the course of a season you get what you deserve.
We all know West Brom like to play and how they like to pass the ball, perhaps, to the detriment of some of their results.
Their manager Tony Mowbray has made no excuses for keeping the same style because it's what he believes in but, ultimately, they have got relegated.
You play with the players you have got. I'm sure Tony Mowbray has tried to iron out those defensive errors but if they carry on then you have to ask if maybe you have to change the players.
He obviously has not got a huge budget so he has to work with the players on the training pitch and you can improve players.
I'm sure he's been doing defensive work but it is a team effort and individual errors will happen. Unfortunately, the centre-back has made a mistake at a crucial time and they have been punished.
That has happened on more than one occasion for West Brom and you can go down the league and say that the teams down at the bottom have all made individual defensive mistakes that have led to goals.
But West Brom's fans were absolutely amazing. They stuck by their team and sung Tony Mowbray's name right to the final whistle.
You have to give them great credit for that and they have seen some really great football this season. But I do think you do finish where you deserve to.
