| Sunday, 3 November, 2002, 18:55 GMT Hoddle rues missed chance ![]() Hoddle (left) and Ranieri prowl the touchline Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle saw his side's goalless draw with Chelsea as a missed opportunity. Spurs have failed to beat the Blues in 22 attempts since the foundation of the Premiership and Hoddle saw his side's attempts to break that duck foiled largely by Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini.
The Italian produced three brilliant saves to keep the scoresheet blank. Hoddle said: "The way we played in the second half, that was a chance missed. "We started a bit slowly in the first half but our momentum got better and better and I felt we should have won the game. "We had a purple patch, but couldn't get that elusive goal, and the performance of their goalkeeper was wonderful - for them," he added. Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri joined the applause for Cudicini. "I have a fantastic keeper and he saved all the shots," he said.
"He is in good condition and he played well. It is not for me to say if he is the best in the Premiership because he is my goalkeeper. "People say he should be in the national team, but Italy have two good goalkeepers in Francesco Toldo and Gigi Buffon. "I had Toldo for four years in Florence and I was sure about him, just as I am sure about Cudicini." Ranieri was relieved that a passionate match never boiled over as in previous seasons. "Last season there was too much fire and I told my team to play hard but with respect," he said.
That was underlined by Spurs' boss Hoddle, who said: "Derbies are more passionate and there are a lot of them if you are in London. "There is rivalry between the fans because you have to go into work the next day and stand next to your friends. "This was hard fought, but played in the right spirit." The one sour note for Chelsea was a groin injury to last season's top scorer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Ranieri said: "I don't know the full extent yet. I hope he can recover early but it looks like keeping him out for a couple of weeks." |
