| Friday, 19 July, 2002, 05:22 GMT 06:22 UK Ridsdale holds firm over Rio ![]() Ferdinand's future is the main issue at Elland Road Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has reiterated his determination to keep Rio Ferdinand at the club after holding showdown talks with the player on Thursday.
Ferdinand - one of England's most impressive players at the World Cup - submitted a transfer request on Wednesday, which was promptly rejected by Ridsdale. And Ridsdale attempted to persuade Ferdinand to commit his future to Leeds at a meeting on Thursday. "I met Rio Ferdinand on Thursday and we had amicable and constructive talks about his future," said Ridsdale. "I stressed that we do not wish to sell Rio under any circumstances and would like to see him fulfil the contract he signed in November 2000." The Leeds chairman also emphasised that the club have not received a suitable offer for Ferdinand and added: "Rio has assured us that if the position remains as it is, he will give his full commitment as a player and captain to Leeds United." Ridsdale also hinted that he wants the situation resolved by the time Leeds fly off to the Far East for their pre-season tour on Saturday. "I hope I can soon go back on holiday to rejoin my family in Monaco, depending how the next 24 hours turns out," said Ridsdale. But he did not mention whether Ferdinand had withdrawn his transfer request. And Manchester United are understood to be poised to reopen negotiations should cash-strapped Leeds be left with no option but to sell their most valuable asset. Leeds received an offer from Old Trafford for Ferdinand several weeks ago, which is believed to have been in the region of 20m. The Yorkshire are likely to want at least 30m to prise Ferdinand away from Elland Road.
And Ridsdale said that Manchester United's rivalry with Leeds would not affect any deal. "I do not treat any club different to any other. It would be wrong to do so under any circumstances." Prior to meeting Ferdinand, Ridsdale had admitted a substantial bid could leave Leeds with no alternative but to sell. "We are a public company, I am merely an employee and I have a duty to shareholders to maximise the value of our assets," said Ridsdale. "If we receive any reasonable offers for any of our players, including Rio, we will consider it and debate it but that is not the position at the moment. "He has asked to be put on the transfer list at a time when there has not been an acceptable offer and that has been rejected." Ferdinand signed a six-year deal when he joined Leeds for 18m from West Ham in November 2000, a record fee for a transfer between British clubs. Since then, the 23-year-old he has made 73 appearances for Leeds, scoring three goals. |
