Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has proposed a rest period in January to ensure top-flight players do not experience burn-out during the course of the season.

And Taylor believes the move would benefit the whole of English football.

"I think a break would be good for regenerating batteries," said Taylor.

"It would have to be a proper break though. If there was a four-week break in January at least two would have to be no training and total rest.

"It might also give a chance for the Football League. They could have games during that period and it would help to boost their attendances, so it could work both ways."

Many Premiership sides have enough players on their books to allow them to rest their top stars, but Taylor insists it is unrealistic to expect them to do so.

"Managers like their best players in as often as possible," he said.

"There is a squad system but the rotation system has worked and not worked.

"It depends very much on how a team is going and not every team at the top level in the Premiership can afford the size of squad that Manchester United and Arsenal have."

Taylor backs Dein's plans to impose a ban on club tours during the winter break so players can return to action fully refreshed.

And he is in favour of extending the length of the season to accommodate the rest period, provided it did not interfere with preparations for international tournaments.

But Taylor dismissed Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's suggestion that players would have to take a pay cut if a break was introduced.

"They are playing for about 48 weeks out of 52 now. We're not going back to the dark ages where they say 'if you don't play you don't get paid'," added Taylor.

"It is a full-time commitment to get to the top and in order to play at your very best the body needs rest periods.

"You wouldn't have racehorses turned out as often as footballers do or there would be an outcry."
