Southend's three-match winning run came to an end as they were easily beaten by Shrewsbury Town.
Jon Taylor broke the deadlock with his third goal in two games, firing Matt Harrold's pass into the bottom corner.
And ex-Southend forward Harrold doubled the Shrews' lead when he latched onto James Collins' ball.
The hosts' only chances came from Ryan Hall's curling effort and Craig Easton's tame shot, but both were comfortably saved by keeper Ben Smith.
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "I think we were beaten by a better team today. I also think we are a team and we do not have the individual players that will win football games for us.
"We have to be on top of our game as 11 players, and I felt there was several players off the pace and tempo.
"They have good players, so when they take leads they are very difficult to break down."
Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire: "We can look back on it and think it's a good days work.
"It was a character performance, particularly after the run we've had of poor results.
"There's a fresh feeling about the team now. There's a determination that perhaps looked a little diluted over the last five to six weeks."
