Southend United midfielder Anthony Grant earned a point at the Meadow with a stunning late volley.
Mark Wright put Shrewsbury ahead after latching on to Matt Harrold's header to score his fifth goal in seven games.
Wright then went close to scoring a second with a sharp left-foot shot that was well saved by Glenn Morris.
But Grant made up for a glaring miss in the first half with his volley, securing a draw for the Shrimpers only three minutes from the final whistle.
Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire: "Southend were well organised. It was difficult to play through them.
"We dropped too deep, too early. When you do that it invites pressure.
"We've not played well, we can pass the ball far better than that but we have worked hard."
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "Well, after the disappointment of the last three games it was important we went somewhere and got a result of sorts.
"The club has been like Emergency Ward 10 this week, people have been carrying all sorts of knocks.
"So I must be pleased to take a point."
