Darlington striker Pawel Abbott scored twice in the second half to confirm Chester's relegation from League Two.
The Blues needed to turn around their vastly inferior goal difference to have any chance of staying up but Abbott struck from an indirect free-kick.
Darlington were pegged back a minute from time when Ian Miller headed Anthony Barry`s cross into his own net.
But Abbott won it when he controlled a pass from the right and drilled past Jamie Spencer in stoppage time.
