Charlton Athletic striker Paul Benson scored his seventh goal of the season to deny Bristol Rovers a first win at The Valley since 1958.
A shock was on the cards when Wayne Brown hammered Rovers into the lead from Ben Swallow's pass.
But Benson converted from Kyel Reid's cross to rescue a point.
And Charlton went close to winning it as Lee Martin shot wide before Mikkel Andersen made fine stops from Alan McCormack and Akpo Sodje.
Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope told BBC Radio Bristol: "We knew it would be a tough test for us. We came in carrying a few suspensions, a few injuries and a few people playing out of position.
"After being a goal up away from home, maybe there's a tinge of disappointment we didn't win the game.
"But I thought it was a magnificent effort from the players."
