Nottingham Forest came from behind to win their first Championship game of the season and pile more pressure on Preston manager Darren Ferguson.
After Nathan Tyson headed wide for the visitors it was Preston who took the lead when Jon Parkin collected Paul Parry's pass and drilled home.
But Forest levelled when Tyson found Lewis McGugan and his low 20-yard shot flew past keeper Andy Lonergan.
McGugan won it with a stunning left-foot shot from Chris Cohen's cross.
Forest's first win in any competition since April - and first at Preston since Boxing Day 1960 - lifted them up to 15th in the Championship, while Preston, who have lost five out of six league games this season, stay 23rd.
Preston ran into an inspired McGugan, who was desperate to stake a claim for a regular place in the Forest side as he made his first league start of the season.
His sizzling drive in the 11th minute forced Lonergan to save and he was at the heart of everything Forest created as first Tyson nodded glaringly wide and then Chris Gunter shot wastefully over.
But after Parkin, who caused Wes Morgan and Kelvin Wilson problems all evening with his physical threat, held off Gunter to open the scoring it was McGugan's night from then on.
He scored his first goals since finding the net at home against North End last December to earn Forest boss Billy Davies some welcome relief after their torrid start to the new campaign.
