High-flying Bristol City were made to settle for a point at Oakwell in a game they could easily have lost.
Barnsley striker Iain Hume had the best chance of the game when he was through one-on-one but was denied by a fine save from keeper Adriano Basso.
Jon Macken also wasted a fine opportunity and Jamal Campbell-Ryce hit the bar with a deflected free-kick.
At the other end, Gavin Williams and Marvin Elliott both went close for the below-par visitors.
Barnsley boss Simon Davey: "We had the best chances of the game. Two of them were great chances. We've hit the crossbar as well.
"In the end it's a 0-0 draw, but it's a clean sheet, which is positive, and it's another point at home.
"We've played a very good side here today, we've drawn with them, had a lion's share of the play and we looked the better side."
Bristol City boss Gary Johnson "I thought they got into our penalty area more than we got into theirs. They are a decent team here, I know they are down the bottom, but in the end we are happy.
"We had to defend free-kicks and corners and we did that quite well today. It is a sixth clean sheet in 13 games so we have positives to take home."
