Preston came from behind to secure a brilliant opening day win at Ipswich, who had a fine home record last season.
The Tractor Boys took the lead with two minutes on the clock when striker Kevin Lisbie nodded in a Danny Haynes cross.
But Preston hit back when captain Paul McKenna smashed a 25-yard piledriver into the top corner and then Simon Whaley tapped in Billy Jones' centre.
Ipswich's Owen Garvan forced Andy Lonergan to save well while Pim Balkestein drilled a shot wide in vain.
Ipswich boss Jim Magilton: "We obviously got off to such a flying start - it was a fantastic goal, great for Kevin Lisbie.
"Because we had such a fantastic home record last year, some of our lads thought it was automatically going to happen.
"We got punished for a sloppy 15 minutes. We didn't have a sense of urgency. As a result of that, we start the season with a defeat. Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it's a wake-up call."
Preston boss Alan Irvine: "We've been doing quite a lot of shooting in the last week or so and doing it specifically to players' positions.
"Paul has been striking the ball well. It was a very good strike.
"Ipswich is a hard place to come and they are a really good team. It was a magnificent result."
