Geraint Williams showed his credentials by guiding Colchester to within a whisker of the Championship play-offs in his first season in management. Williams learned a lot in his first campaign, which also gave him a ringside seat to view the contenders for Monday's heavyweight contest at Wembley.
Here he runs the rule over the contenders in a game that could be worth more than 60m to the winner.
THE MANAGERS
Mowbray and Davies will go head-to-head at Wembley on Monday |
WEST BROM
Tony Mowbray has the strongest squad in the division.
He has got some very talented players at his disposal and he tends to play a regulation 4-4-2 and rely upon the quality of his players to do the job.
DERBY
Billy Davies is very thorough in his scouting and preparation and he will pick a system to suit the opposition Derby are playing.
He may not have the sort of attacking and flair players at his disposal that West Brom have, but he has a versatile squad that allows him to change his system to suit any game.
TACTICS
WEST BROM
When you are the strongest team, you have to impose your game on the opposition, and that is what Tony Mowbray will ask Albion to do.
Albion have the players that allow them to be more adventurous. Mowbray has certainly got great options up front, where he can choose from four excellent strikers.
Kevin Phillips and Diomansy Kamara appear to be his favoured front two, but he has also got Nathan Ellington and Sherjill McDonald as well.
Albion provide the strikers with good service from all over the pitch, although you would not say they have natural wingers or wide players.
Jason Koumas (right) and Robert Koren have been playing out on the flanks, but both tend to drift inside. However, the Baggies still manage to get width and get crosses in because they have good players all over the pitch.
DERBY
Every team needs a strong spine and that is where your main players are, especially in Derby's case.
At the back they have Darren Moore and Dean Leacock, in midfield they have Matt Oakley (right), and up front Steve Howard.
The play-off semi-final against Southampton was an example of how Billy will change his tactics to suit.
He knew they were without Claus Lundekvam and Darren Powell, their big central defenders, so he decide to hit Howard up front.
It is a legitimate tactic to play to your strengths when the opposition have weaknesses.
Billy is also willing to make changes in midfield.
Matt Oakley has tended to be his main player in there, and he has paired him with David Jones.
Jones is a player who likes to put his foot on the ball and play. But recently, when Derby have needed a bit of steel in there, Davies has brought in Seth Johnson who will battle and scuffle for the second ball.
And If he thinks he needs to, Davies will also play all three in there - Jones, Johnson and Oakley.
KEY PLAYERS
WEST BROM
West Brom probably have more key players - Kamara, Phillips, Koumas - and there is more of a threat running through the team.
In a one-off game, you are looking for players like that to produce the bit of magic that can win it.
Kevin Phillips (right) was on fire towards the end of the season when he came back from injury, and Kamara has been outstanding all season.
DERBY
Derby missed the chance to clinch automatic promotion when they lost at Crystal Palace on 29 April and that just showed how much they missed Moore (right) who was out of that game.
He is a big unit, a good organiser and they build their defence around him.
Steve Howard is always a threat up front, a good target and outlet, and he is also a goalscorer.
WHERE IT COULD BE WON...OR LOST
Derby will be there with a game-plan with which Davies will think he can negate or curb West Brom, and threaten themselves.
 | 606: DEBATE |
They will work on set pieces and, as they showed against Southampton, they have players in Moore and Howard, who are very dangerous at set plays, and people like Oakley who can deliver the ball in the right areas. Derby's approach will have to combat the edge in flair that West Brom have. Tony Mowbray will rely on his players being good enough to adapt and overcome it.
