Welling player-manager Jamie Day is happy to not play
Day was appointed manager at Welling United in November 2009
Welling player-manager Jamie Day said he is happy to remain on the sidelines as long as his side keep winning.
The Wings have blazed a trail in the Blue Square Bet South this season and are top of the table after six games.
Day told BBC Radio Kent: "If they're playing well and I don't deserve to be in the team, then that's how it stays.
"If we keep winning, I'm happy to watch from the side. I make the decision on whether I'm in the side and, at the minute, I don't deserve to be."
Welling United have surprised many with their early season form, winning five and drawing one on their ascent to the summit of the league.
Speaking after his side's 4-1 victory over bottom-of-the-table Thurrock, Day insisted it was too early to think about promotion.
"We set ourselves targets and we're delighted to be top but there's a long way to go and we're not getting carried away.
"At the start of the season, I thought this year would be a lot harder than last season. We're very pleased to be where we are at the minute," said the 31-year-old.
He added: "If we can keep players fit and everyone keeps a reasonable level of form, I think we'll be there or thereabouts.
"There's probably four or five clubs who have bigger squads and bigger budgets, which might tell during the season."
