New Margate manager Chris Kinnear discovered the task ahead of him as he lost his first game back in charge of the Ryman Premier Division club.
Returning to Hartsdown Park five years after leaving they lost 3-0 to Lowestoft on Saturday.
Kinnear told BBC Radio Kent: "It's not going to be easy. You don't take over sides top of the table."
Elsewhere Maidstone, Chatham and Whitstable secured vital wins in their battles to avoid relegation.
Maidstone's 2-1 win at promotion-chasing Bury Town means if they win their remaining two games they could remain a Ryman Premier Division club.
They are four points inside the relegation zone going into the final week of the season.
Maidstone player-manager Jay Saunders said: "It was a great result and nothing more than we deserved.
"The side is a very good side, there have been a lot of changes but we are settled now so we are looking good.
"It was more about getting belief. Winning games gives you that belief. When it was 1-1 I said if we come away without three points we would have been disappointed.
"When I took over everyone accepted we were down but now seeing the reaction and the belief is good. If we can pull it off it will be the best place to be," he added.
Whitstable Town ensured their safety in Ryman South with a 4-0 win over Horsham YMCA. Ian Pullman scored twice to give Peter Nott's side another year in the division.
Chatham Town can still pull off the unexpected escape after winning 3-2 at home to Walton Casuals. Joe Fuller netted twice for the Medway side who know they have to win both remaining games to have a chance of staying in Ryman South.
Tonbridge Angels dropped to fourth place in Ryman Premier after a 2-0 defeat to Harrow Borough. It means Harrow go above them but defeats for play-off rivals Canvey and Bury Town keep their play-off destiny in their own hands.
The Kent league title race is closer than it was before the Easter period after Herne Bay won 3-0 at Fisher, making the most of a surprise defeat for leaders Hythe on Good Friday.
With two games to go Hythe have a two-point advantage over Herne Bay.
On Friday, Dover Athletic moved into the play-off zone for the first time since January with a 3-0 win over Basingstoke, although they lost their place in the top five on Saturday when Woking overtook them with a win at Farnborough.
Ebbsfleet United are still waiting for the two points they need to secure a play-off place after suffering a 3-1 defeat by Chelmsford.
To make matters worse for the Fleet, midfielder Ashley Carew was sent off for two bookable offences, which means he is expected to miss both legs of the play-off semi-final should they get there.
