Gateshead advanced to the second round of the FA Trophy after Nathan Fisher's late goal against Southport in their first round replay on Tuesday.
Both sides had a number of chances to break the deadlock throughout the game but were wasteful in front of goal.
That was until the 89th minute when a through-ball from midfielder Phil Turnbull found Fisher who blasted home.
The Tynesiders will now face Hampton & Richmond Borough at home on Saturday in the second round.
Southport manager Liam Watson told BBC Radio Merseyside: "We've had four great chances in the second half and their keeper hasn't had a shot to save.

"We lost our discipline right at the end when everyone crowded their box. They've broken away from our corner and it was a great finish from Fisher.
"Gateshead have gone through, we've gone out and we can only blame ourselves."
