Bacup fail to reach third round of FA Vase

Non-league football

Lancashire's interest in the FA Vase is over for another season following Bacup Borough's exit from the competition after a 1-0 defeat at Formby.

A first half goal from Formby player-manager Gary Martindale clinched victory for the home side.

The visitors were unhappy when they appeared to have grabbed a last minute equaliser only for it to be denied.

Bacup had enjoyed the best of the early possession with Haydn Paul going close on 20 minutes.

Ten minutes later an angled shot from Bacup's Chris Ogunyode just shaved the far post.

But Formby took the lead against the run of play eight minutes before the break when Martindale volleyed home a cross from former Everton midfielder John Paul Kissock.

In the early stages of the second half, Daniel Cocks and Ogunyode came close with shots from the edge of the box, and Bacup were rarely threatened at the back as the home side were content to sit in and hit on the break.

As the game moved into the last 10 minutes, Cocks twice beat the Formby offside trap to race through on goal, but on each occasion was denied by saves from home keeper James McGuire.

With two minutes to go, the game's major talking point arose when Ogunyode latched on to a through ball and coolly tucked a shot into the corner of the net past the advancing keeper, only to see the effort ruled out for offside.

Furious protests from the Bacup players ensued, and Ogunyode received a yellow card for voicing his opinion to the assistant referee whose flag ruled out the effort.
