The hosts nearly went ahead in the first half through defender James Curtis, who headed wide from a corner.
The Mariners improved after the break, midfielder Lewis Gobern's strike forcing a tidy save from Gateshead keeper Tim Deasy.
Grimsby's best effort came on the hour mark, Mark Hudson hitting the post from 18 yards out.
