Shaun Densmore scored a second-half penalty as Altrincham saw off Barrow to secure a first league win this season.
Barrow's Paul Edwards handled the ball in the area and Densmore netted from the spot to set the home side on the way to a first success in 10 games.
Substitute Damian Reeves doubled the lead when he fired home from 12 yards.
The visitors had their chances with Mark Boyd hitting the crossbar from a 30-yard free-kick and Gregg Blundell also striking a post but Alty held on.
But the win was not enough to lift Altrincham off the foot of the Blue Square Premier Bet table.
