Rushden & Diamonds 1-0 AFC Wimbledon

Rene Howe
Howe has joined Rushden on loan from Peterborough until January

Rene Howe grabbed his first goal for Rushden & Diamonds to end AFC Wimbledon's winning start to the season in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Howe's impressive second-half strike from 20 yards was enough to secure Diamonds' first win of the season.

Minutes before, Sammy Moore went close the Dons but his shot from inside the area was saved by Dale Roberts.

Diamonds are unbeaten at home after drawing 1-1 with Fleetwood in their opening game of the season.

Rushden & Diamonds manager Justin Edinburgh told BBC Radio Northampton:
"It was a very special goal and one that Rene deserved. He's been threatening and he got his rewards tonight.

"Obviously we needed to stop the rot of back-to-back defeats. We deserved it because of the determination and the response the players gave me after the last two results.

"They showed maturity against a very good side, who had won three games, and hopefully we can build on this."
